Latin Turkey Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp Black Pepper EVOO (save a little out to brush on hamburger buns)
  • 1 medium white onion, diced
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp ground allspice
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 1 six-oz can tomato paste
  • 1/3 cup raisins (a mix is nice from the bulk section of grocery store)
  • ½ cup pimento-stuffed olives, chopped, plus 2 tbsp olive juice
  • ¼ tsp A-Premium white balsamic, or to taste (it just brightens things up)
  • 1 ripe organic avocado, sliced
  • 4 Dave's Killer hamburger buns, split

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Heat 2-1/2 tbsp of Black Pepper EVOO in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until it softens, about 2 minutes. Add bay leaves, cumin, chili powder, and allspice. Toast 1-2 minutes, then add the turkey, salt, and pepper. Cook about 5 minutes, breaking up the meat.
  3. Add tomato paste and mix well, 3-4 minutes. Add 2 cups water, raisins, olives, olive juice, and white balsamic. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook over medium heat until thickened, 15 minutes or so. Uncover and cook, stirring, 3 more minutes. Taste and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Drizzle the cut sides of the hamburger buns with olive oil and place on a baking sheet. Warm in the oven about 5 minutes. Place turkey mixture on one side of roll, top with avocado slices, then place top bun over all.

Note

These can be pretty messy as hand-held sandwiches. Another option is to place warmed buns on plate side by side and put turkey mixture and avocado over both and eat with fork.
