Feast at the Market

Sometimes a fundraising idea really has legs. Not only is Feast in the Market celebrating its 30th year, but you get to use your legs to explore and enjoy the Market neighborhood.

The concept is a self-guided progressive dinner through the Pike Place Market neighborhood. Restaurants, wineries and breweries create a specially-prepared dish just for the Feast. Guests get a book of tickets and then exchange them for a dish at whatever location they want, in whatever order they want. With more than 20 participating locations, no one is going hungry or thirsty.

Proceeds from the event go to Neighborcare Health's Pike Market Medical Center, one of those under-the-radar places that do enormous good. The Center provides medical and mental health care to nearly 5,000 people (42% are homeless and 38% are uninsured).

"The event has always benefited patient care," says Events Coordinator Clover Thurk. "And the support from the Market restaurants has always been exceptional and continues to grow along with the number of restaurants in the Market. The Pink Door, Place Pigalle, Pike Place Bar & Grill, Kell's, Cutters, and Maximilien have been involved from the beginning. It's fun to look back and see the food trends. One year ceviche was popular, last year we had several salmon tartare. This year seems to be pork and pork belly."

A quick look at the evening:

5:30-6:30 p.m.    Tour of clinic, complimentary Waterbrook wine

6-9 p.m.                Set your own dining/drinking/walking pace

8:30-10 p.m.        Gather for sweets/coffee/live music/raffle

"The Market neighborhood and the medical center have such a diverse population," says Clover. "This event brings everyone who loves the Market, the medical center, and Market food together. This year we're gathering for dessert at the Joe Desimone Bridge. Live music will be provided by Squirrel Butter, buskers from the Market. Some of our donations for the raffle come from people who use the medical center. It's a wonderful group of people." It's also very inclusive: everyone is welcome. It's helpful to buy your tickets early so the participating businesses can gauge how much food to have on hand.
