Thanksgiving/fall wines

We've asked some wine shops around town to name one wine they'd recommend this month. Here's what they tell us.

North City Bistro & Wine Shop

Wine: 2019 Berne Rosé

Area: Mediterranean region of south France

Price: $15 per 750 ml bottle, $13 per bottle for 6-pack, $12 per bottle for full case, $25 per magnum (2 left)

Notes:

  • Beautiful rose, light pink, stunning package.

· Pairs beautifully with turkey or ham. Also works well with spicy food like Szechuan chicken or Mexican dishes with a little heat.

· Inviting aromatics: dominant orchard fruits like peaches, peach ring candies, and a sweet fruit salad.

· Freshness, fruitiness of the wine hits you at the front of your tongue.

· Blend: 45% Grenache Noir, 25% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, 15% Merlot

Champion Cellars

Wine: NV Lingot Martin Bugey-Cerdon

Area: Savoie, France

Price: $17.85 per bottle, $16.06 per bottle for 6 or more bottles (mix and match is okay)

Notes:

· Bugey lies on the line between Lyon and Geneva in the foothills of the alps where grapes have been grown since Roman times.

· Cerdon is a 'cru' of the Bugey wine region, with grapes grown on steep slopes ranging up to and over 1200 feet. It is a single-fermentation sparkling wine.

· Light color, low alcohol, a fine light bubble, and red-fruit flavors, finishing more or less demi-sec, depending on the cuvée.

· A wonderful table wine, cheerful and sparkly. Red berries, baking spice, notes of brown sugar, and a lifted finish make this wine the cranberry to your turkey, the cream soda to your root beer kind of wine.

· Pairs wonderfully with an array of savory dishes (chicken and turkey sandwiches!) and Thanksgiving in the fall. Delightful after dinner as well.

  • 100% Gamay

Esquin Wine Merchants

Wine: 2017 Mill & Mine Red

Area: Columbia Valley

Price: $15.99 per bottle

Notes:

· This is a new label for Esquin and they are excited about it.

· Columbia Valley red; cool vineyards shine through. You can taste the soil. Silky and creamy with just enough grip. Touch of oak on the palate.

· A serious wine for under $20.

· Beautiful with grilled steak or portobello mushrooms.

· In the early 1930s, architect Earl A. Roberts designed an office and warehouse at the corner of 4th Ave S. and S. Lander Street for Mill and Mine Supply Co. which they owned until 1952. The building has retained its architectural integrity through many years and many owners and tenants. Esquin Wine & Spirits moved into the building in 1998. This exceptional wine pays tribute to this beautiful old building and its grand heritage.

Blanc & Rouge

Wine: 2019 Beaujolais Villages, Domaine Victor Sornin

Area: Morgon, France,

Price: $22 per bottle, 10% discount on 6 bottles, 15% discount on 12 bottles

Notes:

This wine hits the mark for November enjoyment based on several points.

· First, it is Gamay…a hallmark wine for a turkey pairing. There are few selections that cuddle up to turkey and let that main event dish shine. It is equally hard to find a wine that can go from app to dessert or pair with a variety of dishes with such ease. Being a light bodied red wine, with some of the features of its cousin Pinot Noir, it is remarkably flexible wine that plays well with pork and steak plus salmon, cod, spicy shrimp dishes, and creamy cheeses.

· Second, it is Gamay…a light-skinned grape that produces crowd-pleasing wines that both red and white wine drinkers enjoy. Put that together with soft tannins and a bouncy fruit quality full of cherry flavors that makes it even more lovable like a Labrador Retriever.

· Finally, this is a Gamay produced by a French family near Morgon. This wine has been crafted with biodynamically-grown grapes off of 50-60 year old vines and spontaneous fermentation.

· Enjoy delicate floral scents and subtle earthy notes.
