Celebrating One Year of SIFF Cinema Downtown: A Tribute to the Famous Chocolate Popcorn

By Linda Lowry

As we celebrate the first anniversary of the historic SIFF Cinema Downtown reopening, it's a perfect moment to reflect on the incredible journey and cherished traditions that have made this venue a beloved cultural landmark. This special occasion was marked by a screening of "Wonka," the first film that graced the Cinerama's screen when it reopened to the public a year ago. This whimsical choice was a nod to the theater's rich history and commitment to bringing joy and wonder to audiences of all ages.

One of SIFF Cinema Downtown's most beloved traditions is its famous chocolate popcorn. This delectable treat has been a staple for moviegoers, adding a unique and delicious twist to the cinema experience. The history of this iconic snack dates back to the theater's earlier days, and it has remained a fan favorite ever since. The combination of rich, velvety chocolate and perfectly popped corn creates an irresistible treat that keeps patrons returning for more. You don't have to purchase a movie ticket to buy this tasty popcorn! Just let the Box Office know you're there to purchase the popcorn, and you can indulge in this unique sweet and salty mix of flavors.

The secret to this culinary delight lies in its special recipe, which involves melting coconut oil in a heavy pot before adding the kernels and Glaze Pop. This meticulous process ensures that each kernel is evenly coated, resulting in a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. Once coated, the popcorn is cooled to allow the chocolate to set, creating a delightful crunch with every bite. If you don't have a sweet tooth but enjoy a mix of salty and sweet, you can also order a mixed popcorn, which combines their buttery flavored popcorn with

the chocolate popcorn. This unique snack has become synonymous with the Cinema experience, and many visitors consider it a must-have when attending a screening. You can pair this delectable treat with beverages from Alexandria Nicole Cellars, Rachel's Ginger Beer, Yonder Cider, or Caffe Vita. Regular sodas, water, and assorted candies are also

available, making for a complete and satisfying cinema experience.

In addition to its cinematic offerings, SIFF has partnered with renowned Seattle chef Tom Douglas to create themed dinners at his popular Seattle establishments that will complement your film experience. This collaboration merges with the best of Seattle's culinary and cinematic worlds, providing guests with a truly immersive experience. Whether it's a gourmet meal inspired by a classic film or a special menu designed to enhance a new release, these dinners have become a highlight of the SIFF experience.

The Cinema Downtown is not just a movie theater; it's a cultural icon in Seattle with a rich history. Opened in 1963 as Seattle's Martin Cinerama, it quickly became a showcase for the innovative Cinerama film format, which used three synchronized projectors to create a panoramic image on a massive, curved screen. Over the years, the theater has undergone several renovations, most notably in the 1990s when it was saved from potential demolition by Paul Allen, who initiated a comprehensive restoration. Today, the Cinerama continues

to be a cornerstone of Seattle's vibrant arts scene, hosting a diverse array of films, festivals, and events. One of the highlights was the Seattle screening of “Boys in the Boat,” which featured appearances by two-time Academy Award winner George Clooney, his stunning wife Amal, and the book's author, Daniel James Brown.

Adding to the allure of the Cinerama is its state-of-the-art 7-track Hi-Fidelity stereophonic magnetic sound system, designed by engineer Hazard Reeves, which delivers unparalleled audio quality. The theater also features customized, spacious chairs that provide excellent support and comfort, ensuring a luxurious viewing experience.

One of the unique attractions at the Cinerama is the opportunity to see replicas of some of the most iconic Star Wars characters, curated by the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP). These life-sized replicas add an extra layer of excitement and nostalgia for fans of the franchise, visiting the Cinerama a truly immersive experience.

This combination of cutting-edge technology, historical significance, and unique attractions makes the Cinerama a must-visit destination for both locals and visitors alike.

As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to many more years of cinematic magic at the SIFF Cinema Downtown. The beloved Seattle International Film Festival, which will take place May 15-25, continues to be a beacon for film enthusiasts, bringing together diverse voices and stories from around the world. Here's to another year of unforgettable films, delicious treats, and the joy of shared experiences in the heart of Seattle.

Happy anniversary, SIFF Cinema Downtown! Let's raise a glass (or a bag of chocolate popcorn) to many more years of movie magic.
