Ángela Ortez-Zarate

Ángela is a third generation chef. Born and raised in Los Angeles into a family obsessed with food and activism, she went on to graduate from Seattle University with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. Following college, she worked in a variety of fields: from community organizing to paralegal work, from retail to web development. Ultimately, an entry-level cook position reignited her passion for the food industry, prompting her to attend culinary school. While attending Seattle Culinary Academy, she was recognized as a Les Dames d'Escoffier Scholar. Since completing the program in 2016, Ángela has been working in Seattle kitchens and restaurants in different capacities. During her time as Executive Chef of Brimmer & Heeltap in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood, Ángela was a guest chef instructor for Tom Douglas Summer Camp Series and featured in Seattle Met and Seattle Magazine.

Her commitment to social justice in the context of the food industry continues to shape her palette and personal philosophy. "Food is like a puzzle," says Ángela. "It's about simple elegance, sustainability, beauty, and respect for all that it takes to bring food to our table."

Currently, Ángela works for the Mama Restaurant Group as Culinary and Operational Manager for Mamnoon Street and Street Eats in downtown Seattle.
