Café Hue
206-625-9833
312 Second Ave S,
Seattle
Pioneer Square
As a generalization, many Vietnamese restaurants are utilitarian. The food may be great but the surroundings are plain. Here is an exception. Designed like a country restaurant, this is a comfortable and pleasant place to enjoy French and Vietnamese dishes. Beer and a nice wine list add to that feeling of comfort.

I Love Pho
425-401-6400
3900 Factoria Blvd SE,
Bellevue
Factoria
Despite it's good size, this place rocks at noon with a line out the door. And with good reason--good food at reasonable prices. Plus the service is quick so if you're on a limited lunch-hour break you'll do fine (as long as you come early or late). Rich, warm colors have been used to make it a comfortable spot and even with a full house, you can actually hear your companions. Along with pho, there's a large menu of stir-fries and other items as well as a special sheet.

Saigon Gourmet
206-624-2611
502 S King St,
Seattle
Pioneer Square
Small, austere yet functional restaurants are a hallmark of the International District. Owners know the truth that big budgets do not always guarantee success and Seattle-ites love to find and share hole-in-the-wall spots with great food. Saigon Gourmet is just such a find with its popular Cambodian soup, shrimp rolls and beef jerky with papaya.

Tamarind Tree
206-860-1404
1036 South Jackson St, Ste A,
Seattle
International District (Little Saigon)
Let's just cut to the chase--it's great food. It's reasonably priced. It's lovely to look at. They have a full bar. The only drawback is that you sometimes have to wait in line because it's a very popular place. It's worth it.

Tangerine Tree
206-322-2081
1430 Harvard Ave E, Ste 210,
Seattle
Capitol Hill
On the top level of a two-story strip mall near a QFC and Bartell's, the Tangerine Tree looks uninteresting from the outside. Step inside and enter another world. Deep red walls, window blinds that make the parking lot fade away and beautiful wall sconces create a very cozy atmosphere. An extensive menu includes appetizers, salads, noodle soups, vermicelli platters or bowls, noodles, rice dishes, a good number of vegetarian dishes, soup, seafood dishes and a good number of larger plates (orange chicken, lemon garlic beef, etc.). Wine and beer.

In this small Vietnamese restaurant, a high counter runs along the left wall and tables fill the room to the right. Columns of white dishes and bowls are piled atop the counter, waiting for a cook to grab and fill as orders come in. Look for lots of rice dishes and noodle soups, Vietnamese crepes and charbroiled shrimp.

Van Loi Noodle Company

If conversation wanes at the table, start watching the action on the other side of the room where noodles are being freshly made in the open kitchen. In addition to slurping down the banh hoi tom chay (rice vermicelli) at one of the ten or so tables, all items are available for take out.

Viet Chi
206-622-4180
710 3rd Ave,
Seattle
Downtown
A quick-food downtown place can be considered successful when it attracts customers even after the captive audience of business workers has gone home. Viet Chi offers Chinese and Vietnamese dishes in the evening as well as lunch fare. Atmosphere can be considered nonexistent, but that would miss the point.
