Red Fin Restaurant   206-441-4340
612 Stewart St, Seattle   Downtown
Bold coloring and very tall front windows make quite a statement. Booths manage to give a sense of privacy and tables along the front window get the view of sidewalk activity. A step up lands you in the lounge and sushi bar. The restaurant serves the hotel as well as the general public, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. There are a few non-Japanese dishes, but the vast majority of the menu is made up of noodles, sushi, sashimi and bento boxes. You'll also find fun dishes like fish 'n chips--miso-poached salmon with Japanese sweet potato tempura. Nightly specials give a reason to return frequently.

Way too much fun--besides great traditional Japanese dishes, sushi, lots of appetizers, snacks and rolls, it's a rare sake house with an amazing array of sakes to learn about and taste. The interior is set up like a house--front porch, hallway leading to dining room, semi-private dining, sushi bar, drink bar and back yard with trees, siding and even a snow machine (all inside). Drink, mingle, relax.

Aoki   206-324-3633
621 Broadway E, Seattle   Capitol Hill
Although a small place, space is used wisely in order to fit in robata and sushi bars and a dining area. Background music generally leans toward jazz vs. anything more Japanese in nature. A pleasant wait staff serves from a large menu featuring donburi, robata, sushi, sashimi and noodle soups.
Specializing in Japanese.

Azuma Sushi   206-937-1148
4533 California Ave SW, Seattle   West Seattle
One of many storefronts along this busy street, Azuma has taken a small space and turned it into a pleasant and comfortable place to dine. Natural wood creates a warm tone. Look for rolls, sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, noodles and teriyaki. Beer and wine.
Specializing in Japanese, Sushi.

Bento Box   425-643-8646
15119 NE 24th St, Redmond   Redmond
Located in an Overlake shopping center, this full-serve restaurant almost feels like fast food, but only because of the quick service. Ingredients are high quality and cooked just right. Vegetables are slightly crisp, not limp. Take a seat in one of the rather firm wood booths and choose between sushi, teriyaki, tempura, katsu or yakisoba. Beer and wine served.
Specializing in Japanese.

Boom Noodle   206-701-9130
1121 E Pike St, Seattle   Capitol Hill
"Boom" is Japanese slang for your latest obsession and Boom Noodle would love to be that obsession for you. It's meant to be a casual, reasonably-priced way to enjoy noodles (as well as a number of small non-noodle plates). The main dining room is filled with long tables meant to be shared by everyone who comes in. The lounge offers bar seating, as well as a fully-stocked bar, a few tall window tables and some smaller tables in the back.
Specializing in Japanese.

Bush Garden   206-682-6830
614 Maynard Ave S, Seattle   International District
For years, this International District Japanese restaurant has been a spot for special-occasion meals as well as family dinners and large parties. The banquet room upstairs can accommodate very large groups. The attraction on the dimly lit main floor is the footbridge arching over a stream. Tatami rooms offer private dining space.
Specializing in Japanese.

Café Calva   206-283-2878
1905 Queen Anne Ave N, Seattle   Queen Anne (Upper)
With just a very few tables and a small sushi counter, Café Calva is an intimate spot, a great place to huddle on a wintery day or a cool spot to weather the admittedly few truly hot summer days. They have a nice mix of Chinese and Japanese menu items, plus fresh nigiri, sashimi and rolls. Bubble tea and espresso are also offered. Friendly owners help make it part of the neighborhood.

"Comfort food with a contemporary twist" and lots of Pacific Rim ingredients means ribs with a banana barbecue sauce, miso fettucine, orange glazed tofu, kalbi tacos and burgers. Dark interior (but lots of windows in the bar), an open kitchen and an intimate dining room offer a pleasant environment.

Flo   425-453-4005
1188 106th Ave NE, Bellevue   Bellevue
Large windows, dark furniture, pale yellow walls and jazz make this a very pleasant place to enjoy a meal. The sushi bar is up front and center along an interesting sand-like wave wall (you'll have to see it yourself) and the dining room is a few steps down past a curved wall. You're in the flow now. Sushi is very fresh and the menu includes lots of rolls and interesting options. The daily special sheet is a very innovative place to be, combining Japanese and Hawaiian culinary treats.
Specializing in Japanese, Sushi, Hawaiian.

Fuji Sushi   206-624-1201
520 S Main, Seattle   International District
On a hill slightly above the International District, this restaurant uses the time-honored rule of Japanese decorating--keep it simple. Thin wood slats on the lower windows create an Asian feel while providing privacy. The full bar is just inside the main door and is separated from the dining area by short dividers. Tatami rooms are at the far end near the small sushi bar. Traditional dishes stock the menu and the sushi is fresh and tasty. Try any of the lunch combos.
